25. Tony Parker

With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today. Over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now. Today, Pascal Giberne takes a look at Tony Parker…

With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today.

Over lunch at the Outback Steakhouse (word to Steve Irwin), your crack SLAMonline.com staff sat down and ranked the 50 best players in the NBA today. We realize that’s kind of ambiguous, but that’s how basketball is and that’s how we like it. Basically, though, we tried to list the 50 guys we think have the most value to their teams, right now, at this moment. This doesn’t mean they’ll never be traded, and it doesn’t mean they’re due tremendous contract extensions, but it does mean — since value is king in the NBA — that over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now.

Before long it’ll be time for our annual NBA team previews. Right now it’s time for some law and order…

25. Tony Parker
by Pascal Giberne

The first time I met TP, he was only 15 years old. Tony was the starting point guard of INSEP, a basketball team in France, and the kid was already murdering veteran players with his blazing speed and superior playmaking skills. While he was a promising young player, he didn’t get much buzz in Europe, and some NBA scouts had high school players like Andre Barrett and Omar Cook way ahead of him.

But Parker didn’t care. He was dreaming big and every time we talked basketball, he was asking me questions about the League: Iverson, Marbury, Kidd. “Tell me about Allen,” Tony would ask. “Is he that quick? How good is he? I don’t want to be like him, though I know I can score. Me, I want to become a true point guard. I really just want to help my team win…”

Did he ever. Looking at him now, nine years after I first saw him, it’s kind of scary. He is still murdering people, only now it’s not in a sub-par French pro basketball division but in the NBA. A regular at the Hollywood parties, thanks to sweetheart Eva Longoria, Tony has become a popular icon worldwide. Paparazzi loves him and he is now recognized as one of the most exciting point guards in the NBA.

And now, with Tony starting to shoot the ball like a sniper, the best is yet to come. Is there anything this kid can’t do?

Well…you know I love you Tony, and you’re my man, but how about stopping that rap thing? Really…

Can’t believe he’s only 24 … he’s going to get better with more experience, especially as a point guard.

Oct.12 at 12:40 pm

Shiz says:
Ryan: Im with you…Parker is a tad overrated, but it seems like the whole Spurs squad is overrated except for TIMMEEH!! I like his quickness and he’s got one of those looping crossovers that help get him into the lane where he uses that unstoppable floater. Im not a fan of the floater, but I am a fan of effectiveness and he is the most effective float-shot-shooter in the league. He’s really a throw back to the way guys used to play. He doesn’t really pound the ball up top and uses speed and angle more than any shimmy-shake move to get by you. It helps having TIMMEEH!! behind him, of course, and the way you negate his impact is by forcing him into a jumpshooter, which Pop despises above all else, but I will not deny that the boy is good. Im not sure though if its because he’s outstanding or because there is a decided lack of great, or even high quality point guards in the L. I got no beef wit son. IM not really worried about placement anymore. And the slots he moved up in on account of bangin the most sexiest “desperate housewife” get negated on account of his terrible rapping efforts and the fact he broke up with her..WHAT?! Somebody needs to explain THAT to me…who broke up with who? Why would you ever leave Eva?! How do you say “moron” in French? Or how about “leave rap to the professionals”…or better yet “turn that hat around, you look like a silly ass 4th grader”. Does anyone have any Youtube clips of him “spittin his darts”? I need a good laugh today…

jbn74sb says:
I just realized that Lamar Odom is not going to be on this list, cause there is no way he’d be ahead of Parker. Which is fine, but there’s also no way he’s not one of the 50 most valuable players in the league. Damn Laker haters!

Billups is definitely better than tony, but tony is a younger player. Again it comes down to the definition of the top 50.

Oct.12 at 1:01 pm

Ryan W. says:
I agree with you Shiz, Parker is a good player. I was laying down the sarcasm; there are way too many people freaking out about this list. I really like it, and there isn’t a reason to be upset about unless Jahidi White is in the top 10 o something like that. But I do disagree with you on Eva. Was TP showing her off, or did she Jackie Christie her way to all those games?

Oct.12 at 1:02 pm

Wong says:
Ermmm… Tony Parker?? You sure?? Really???

Oct.12 at 1:04 pm

Bryant Reeves says:
Tony can’t shoot. He might have a high FG% due to his floaters and other paint moves, but he cannot shoot. Career: .315 3P%, .699 FT%. Dude only averaged 5 assists to go with his 2.5 turnovers last year. He’s fast but he only gets 1 steal/game. This guy does not deserve the 25 spot.

Oct.12 at 1:07 pm

t dot c.arlos says:
Alright, Tony P is not wack and isn’t kwame brown or the tin man(and by that i mean that he does have heart). He stepped up his game last year. His fg% is amazing. And people put him down for just scoring layups, but thats foolish since layups are the easiest bucket. If he can beat his defender and get to the basket and put up 2 pts off or dish it off to another Spur(most likely TD) then good for him and the spurs. But with all that said, slam has clearly put him too high on this list, i mean ridiculously high. This ranking is only justified if tony P. hooked up the slam staff with free BJS from a group of french maids in exchange for a great spot. Im not even going to read the piece on TP. In my eyes he should be ranked btwn 40 and 30. But then again I also feel that rashard lewis, gerald wallace, lamar odom, and especially richard jefferson should be on this list instead of unproven bums and rooks. If you approve this pick youre either french, smell like a frenchie, or a bigger fan of desperate housewives than the nba.

Oct.12 at 1:12 pm

t dot c.arlos says:
jbn74 Although im not a huge odom fan or a Lakers fan for that matter i do agree that odom deserved a spot even though hes been an underachiever. He is good in the post, has great handles for his size, shoots 3s decently, but the most underappreciated aspect of his game is his great passing. We all know he just needs to be more assertive, maybe its just that he doesnt have the fire to be a top player, he seems to be preoccupied with off court stuff like acting and his record label.

Oct.12 at 1:19 pm

t dot c.arlos says:
oh ya another thing since the lakers squad is young and essentially thin, Odom is undeniably valuable to the lakers success. If he steps up his game, develops better chem with kobe, with the development of the younger guys(Kwame and parker especially), and a mid season pick up the lakers could be poised to surprise. i hate kwame by the way.

Oct.12 at 1:19 pm

Rob Stewart says:
I really think TP has game and is deserving of top 50 but closer to the 40’s. Fir some reason he always seems to struggle when it counts. When Manu, Tim Duncan , and Horry pick up the pieces it’s like everyone forgets about his struggles and acts like he is the man. When the pressure increases his game decreases. I’d take billups and cassel over TP at the rec center.

Oct.12 at 1:22 pm

Paolo says:
Tony Parker is quicker. He can break more ankles. He is younger. He is more dazzling in the open court. He uses the tear-drop more. He can penetrate with more guile. He even has the more famous girl. For all the advantegs going him, one thing cannot be said. Tony Parker is not better than Chauncey Billups. It’s a free world, I guess.

Oct.12 at 1:29 pm

JG says:
Parker is absolutely top 50, maybe he’d crack the top 30 on my list, but he isn’t the twenty-fifth most important/best player in the NBA today. Putting him here and putting Kidd in the mid thirties is not right. If you look at the other point guards on the list (Kidd, Bibby, Billups, Terry) the only one in my opinion he beats out is Jason Terry, but not by much. And he most certainly is not ahead of Ray Allen, Shawn Marion.

Oct.12 at 1:55 pm

Rob Stewart says:
Yo Paolo, you said “he can break ankles, more dazzling in the open court, uses a tear drop move, penetrates with more guile.” Hot sauce and Spider do these things better than Billups also. What are you saying.

Oct.12 at 2:08 pm

Shiz says:
Ryan: I think it was mutual. I mean TP gets one of the hottest bitches in the world.. Definite braggin rites in the locker room, huh? And Im sure it worked out for Eva all that free camera time. Note in the above celebritory photo, Tone Capone looks off at God knows what, and Eva’s all smiles for the camera. Cha-ching!! He probably started catchin flack for her like Kidd caught for Jumana, but she’s hardly a Jackie Christie..It was probably more the fact that she’s got him by about 10 years and they’re just at different points in what they want outta relationship…besides free camera time. I know that this may seem a bit off topic, but lets all be honest.. the most interesting part of Tony Parker’s story is definitely his connection to Eva. Other than that he’s just whatever…

ur tellin me tonys better then ray allen?

Oct.12 at 2:37 pm

stop playin' says:
Man, stop playin’!! Tony Parker is overrated!! He can never be compared with Kidd, Billips, Nash, or any other good point guard in the NBA for any reason or season. I do admit that he’s quick and plays good offense, but he has no defensive skills whatsoever!! He seems to punk out every time when trying to play defense or get hurt. Being a NBA fan, I never really heard of the guy until he started dating Eva Longoria and she’s overrated too…but hot as hell! She’s known for vibrators, brazilian wax, and late orgasms and world has a couriosity about those things. Her show is shown in 150 countries and she’s popular in those countries, so why wouldn’t Tony become popular in those countries too? He’s linked to hot ass Eva! Also he’s so popular in France because the french are using him as a “token” to make peace with the USA because he’s here representing his country. Tony baby, the french expects so much from you; the Spurs expects so much from you; and of course, Eva expects so much from you (to keep her popularity going and name in the spot light). Good Luck, man!!

RM # 0 says:
respect to Tony Parker, but Ray Allen is waaaaaay more valuable to the Sonics than Parker is to the Spurs

Oct.12 at 2:44 pm

jbn74sb says:
What’s a little nuts about this is that Chris Paul, on the basis of one year for a non-playoff team, will be ranked ahead of both Ray Allen and Parker. Which sounds crazy, but Paul’s without a doubt the PG you’d choose if you were starting a franchise with one, right now. His Reggie Evans antics in college aside.

Oct.12 at 2:48 pm

jbn74sb says:
t dot c.arlos - The best individual part of Odom’s game is his rebounding. Overall, he presents matchup problems for nearly every team, at 6′10″, left handed, with handles and court vision. Odom’s problem seems to be that he is a genuinely nice guy, and that doesn’t usually add up to a great player. And I’m telling you right now, barring injury, Kwame, for all his faults, will average something like 12 and 8 this year. And his D last year was outstanding. Dude just can’t catch.

Oct.12 at 2:58 pm

t dot c.arlos says:
Kwame’s D outstanding!!!! Thats the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard. Kwame Brown always appears lost on defense. His help defense is terrible. He doesn’t know how to defend when the opposing offense runs pick and rolls. He’s the one that left tim thomas open to drain that 3 and give the suns light. His defensive intensity is laughable at best. His rebounding and post offense has come a long way, but thats not saying much either since he still either does his moves too slow, too fast, or too predictably-or like you mentioned he’ll just drop the ball. Ha Kwame is pathetic defender for a guy of his frame he plays rather soft.

Oct.12 at 3:00 pm

t dot c.arlos says:
you say odom is geniunely nice guy…..give me a break theres tons of “nice guys” that bring it once theyre on court…odom just tends to be complacent, not assertive enough, or disinterested. Its not just that he is defaulting to Kobe like so many espn analysts and journalists claim. He just doesnt seem to want to be the man. Just like rasheed wallace was never comfortable with being a go to guy. by the way i call rasheed wallace as the next pick.

Oct.12 at 3:00 pm

t dot c.arlos says:
and i didnt say odom’s best individual talent was his passing ability, i said most underappreciated.

Oct.12 at 4:05 pm

albie1kenobi says:
first off, awesome picture on top. two tropies in his hands and he’s still looking at something else. i wonder what the hell is so amazing.
as for the ranking… i’ve already been disregarding the numbers for a while now (seeing as there’s no definite criteria for the ranking), but i don’t think he’s better or more valuable to the spurs than Manu. Manu was injured most of the time last year, so the plays last year were skewed. though he’s only 24, so he still has a while to develop and get better.

Oct.12 at 4:07 pm

Will says:
Tony Longoria over Shawn Marion, Ray Allen ??? As I’ve said before, there goes your chance of seeing Chris Webber (21-12-3.5), Rashard Lewis (20-5), Mehmet Okur (18-9-2), Baron Davis (18-9-4), Lamar Odom, Boozer, Ricky Davis, Maggette … they’re all rated below Bargnani ?? again .. Bargnani ???

Oct.12 at 4:26 pm

Christ says:
Tony Parker above Jason Kidd or Chauncey Billups? That’s crazy! Tony Parker above Ray Allen? That’s just insane!

Oct.12 at 4:40 pm

Darksaber says:
Mais bien sur. Great spot for the frenchman, who’s is already at legendary status in his country by the way. Even though he has average assists numbers for a PG, there is one incredible thing about this man: the drive. Oh yeah, and that floater/teardrop thingy. Tony was among league leaders in FG% last season, incredible. And at that age, croissant muncher’s gonna be good for a long time. Manu and T-Dunc robot might get most of the shine, but it takes a point guard with heart to set the teammindset. Good job

Oct.12 at 5:20 pm

Myung says:
Tony Parker is ranked ahead of Jorge Garbage-man of the Raptors?! Tony Parker is ranked ahead of “Someone ranked between #’s 26 and 50 in this arbitrary list compiled over lunch at Outback?!” Sorry, I wanted to pull a Steve Carell from Anchorman and join the rest of you guys who are so heated. Loud noises! Loud noises! (Btw, the Outback Steakhouse near my workplace only opens for dinner. Apparently I need to move to NY in order to enjoy a 12 oz. Outback Special for lunch.)

Shiz says:
Albie: LOL! Right! He’s got this look on his face like “Sacre Bleu! Are those crepes?!!” Must be a pretty big deal…Viva la Eva!! T.Dot: I love Odom just as much if not more than the next man, but he definitely suffers from Pippen-itis. Sometimes it seems as if he’s unwilling to be the focal point of a team, which has, imo, been to his detriment.. But lets not forget how far he’s come. He used to just be another knuckleheaded, pot smokin clipper (if you believe the media) so he has come a long way. I see why people are up in arms about this one considering Mr. Big Shot and “One-man-army” Ason are below him….but…um… you gotta love the way Eva looks in that home jersey, huh?! Can’t wait to see tomorrow’s entry. Im wondering where Shaq is gonna be. He’s fallen off in the last two or 3 years, but he’s got multiple rings and he’s got rings with two different teams. Not an easy accomplishment. I like the Rock Wallace prediction for 24, but I’m thinkin JO outta Indy. Either one would suit me. And man, how the Blazers know how to fuck up a team…It’s sometimes still hard to picture the Blazers with Rock and JO together and they STILL stunk cuz they had too much depth (huh???) and a broke down Scottie P. Well…the Blazer’s still suck…and thanx to Z-bo they can still be considered the Jailblazers…speaking of, where oh where do you fit Zach in all this mayhem?

Oct.12 at 5:50 pm

Dj says:
truth be told, i actually believe TP will surprise a lot of people this year and take his game to the proverbial “next level”. You gotta remember, this kid was a starting Point on a finals contender when he wasnt even 20. people forget how young he is and how point guards peak later (billups, kidd, etc). Except for the bolt of lightning they call devin harris, i have to argue that TP is the fastest player in the league, hands down. AI has aged and is still quick, but in the broken field TP will kill ANYONE. dont look now, but dont be surprised if he finishes his career on level with isaiah thomas or something like that. Not to mention eva. Maybe he sold his soul to the devil or something, no one should be this lucky.

Oct.12 at 6:23 pm

Aaron says:
I don’t know how you can put a one-dimensional point guard ahead of other players like Shawn Marion, Ray Allen, etc. On his own team, two players are more important than he is. As for TP being second to Devin Harris in terms of speed, I think AI is still there and don’t sleep on Leandro Barbosa.

Oct.12 at 6:35 pm

chronically_ill says:
My only knock against TP is that his assist numbers are weak and that he dosent have 3 pt range. But the man is LETHAL in the open court and in the paint, with his speed, handles and floater. He even has nice post moves, which he goes to whenever he gets cut off in the middle of his drives. And he’s only in his early 20’s which means he can work on his playmaking abilities and expanding his range. But ranking TP over Ray Allen, Shawn Marion, Jason Kidd and Chauncey Billups is just crazy, man. TP is a great player, but no way is he more valuable to his team than the guys mentioned above (at least at this point in time).

Oct.12 at 6:40 pm

Arkhimal says:
Tony Parker over Jason kid????? are you kidding me??? there is no PG in the league better than kid, no one, not even Nash…. In favor of Tony Parker we can say that he is, may be, the fastest PG on the league… but remember he can’t score the 3’s on the big games. specialy on the 4 quarter….i think that manu is most valuable for the spurs than tony…
and talking about eva, no words, she’s gourgeus, i think that TP has a pact with the evil.
But, again better than Kid?????????
no way.

scott says:
Agree with Carlos, Parker should be somwhere between 40 and 30. Parker is a nice player. Who shoots 55% at the point guard spot? However, Parker is the third best player on his team. Isn’t as clutch as Ginobili or play great d. Putting Parker ahead of Josh Howard, Michael Redd, Kirk Hinrich, Ray Allen, Chauncey Billups, Shawn Marion, or Manu Ginobili thats just dumb.

Oct.12 at 8:00 pm

Noah Doucette says:
TP is young and really fast but so what, so is TJ ford. He is friendly and everything but he cant compare when you lump him in with chauncy, jkidd, and not to disrespect TP but his number were around the same as Mike James’s (save fg%)

Did the kid from Singapore really just ask about ghettos…? “Do ghetto’s have tv’s?” Lol! Thats a really random and condescending question but its hilarious so I cant get mad at that shit…Lol. Scott: I guess your right about Shaq. It just sux cuz I was a Shaq fan for the longest, even after he went all Benedict Arnold on the Magic…Its been a loooong road for the Big Fella and I’ve watched his game and personality mature (although that personality maturation is still a work in progress for the Big Laugh Track)…So I guess I just look at Shaq through rose colored cardiers… But he has fallen off, and he’s gone back to that nasty habit of his before the triangle offense of just rooting himself to either box and just standing there with his arm out waitin for the ball… …but apparently he’s got many leather bound books…that smell of rich mahogany…and a Superman bed bigger than most peoples bathroom that can be rented out for like a 100 G’s a weekend…Superman Emblem included…thats gotta count for somethin

Oct.30 at 5:59 pm

Skoblar says:
Ok some clarifications from a Frenchman seem necessary. TP as you said isn’t the 25th best NBA player (for the moment at least…), many pointguards are better than him at present and that’s true he’s overrated. But with 5 years behind him in the league he has got 2 rings and he deserves it. Then you’re wrong he can defend, if not he wouldn’t play for the spurs. Also he will never be a great shooter but he’s working and improves. But if he hasn’t got the jump shoot your American pointguards have, TP on the court is more intelligent than ‘em, he has got a perfect court vision and he’s extremely mature (why do you know nba coaches decided he was an allstar this year?). But that’s a fact he has definitely no grace or elegance in his moves, his shoot is totally non-academic and his style is ugly…but it works not so bad. So yeah no doubt his true rank is between 30th and 40th. Now another important thing : TP is MUCH more popular in the US than in France you have to know it. Here people only talk about soccer they don’t care about basketball. Also he played in France, plays for French National Team and feels French but he’s not really French : he’s born in Belgium, his father is American, his mother Swedish and we expect absolutely nothing from him. Last month on a French TV show a journalist asks him “what do you think of S.Royal?” (the futur French President) he answered “sorry i don’t know who she is..” His life is basketball and anything else. Aah and about Eva, yeaah he fucks one of the hottest pussy on earth, for sure.. If only you had seen his ex-fiancée Lorianne..how do you say “un thon” in America (”a tunny”?!). And damn yeah he’s ridiculous when he tries to rap, everybody is joking him about it in France too… Anyway the best French player is Boris Diaw, you hear men BORIS DIAW. And you will learn to know him believe me. Bye guys.
