20. Chris Bosh
With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today. Over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now. Today, Ben Osborne takes a look at Chris Bosh.
With summer dragging on and on and on before the NBA tips off, we’ve decided to initiate a multipart series that will be the definitive look at the best players in the NBA today.
Over lunch at the Outback Steakhouse (word to Steve Irwin), your crack SLAMonline.com staff sat down and ranked the 50 best players in the NBA today. We realize that’s kind of ambiguous, but that’s how basketball is and that’s how we like it. Basically, though, we tried to list the 50 guys we think have the most value to their teams, right now, at this moment. This doesn’t mean they’ll never be traded, and it doesn’t mean they’re due tremendous contract extensions, but it does mean — since value is king in the NBA — that over the next month or so we’ll run down the 50 guys that we think are the 50 best players, right here, right now.
Before long it’ll be time for our annual NBA team previews. Right now it’s time for some law and order…
20. Chris Bosh
By Ben Osborne
I may or may not have just spent the last couple days on the road working on a Chris Bosh story, and that may or may not been enough for me to confirm what I’d heard about him from colleagues, which is that he’s a great person to interview because he gives thoughtful answers and expresses his own level of curiosity about others. That stuff doesn’t matter, though, because this list ain’t a popularity contest—it’s about what dudes bring to the floor. And if you’ve ever seen Chris Bosh play (I think “if” is a fair qualifier when discussing the NBA’s oft-ignored Canadian franchise, though it won’t be for long with this guy), you know he brings plenty.
There’s the guard-like quickness in a 6-10 body, the long wingspan and the soft shooting touch. So far it’s been enough for a statistical progression straight out of an NBA scout’s wet dream: 11.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in his first year, 16.8/8.9 in his second, and 22.5/9.2 last year. Clearly, CB had potential, and just as clearly, he’s realized it. One more year of improvement and we’re talking about a 25 and 11 per night, all-NBA first team player. Don’t sleep.

He certainly has the potential to be top 20 but I think this is a little high. Maybe #35 would be a good fit. I may be totally wrong due to the fact that I didn’t have cable last year and never saw him play. I’m just thinking about his USA problems and the Raptors record. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

What “USA problems”? Not getting minutes?
Also, I think this has been explained by some of my co-workers, but in most cases those of us writing these little player descriptions are not responsible for where the player is actually ranked. I’d actually have Bosh closer to 15 myself (yes, above Gasol), but Sam and Lang made the order…

Wow…Im sorry I missed the Gasol entry…Im feelin the grizzly adams beard…he looks like 2can Sam with out it. I wish I’d watched more raptor games, but…well…they’re the raptors…and…ummm…well…they suck so… But I’ve heard Bosh is the truth. I guess since my man PJ “Most likely to get undeserved bench splinters” Tucker is a Raptor now I have a reason to watch…Oh yeah and they got the Longhorn hook up! they should play some exciting ball games this year (not saying they’ll win, but they should be exciting to watch). And my vote for number 1 on this list is Kobe. The truest definition of a one-man-army to hit the L since MJ (NOT sayin he’s mj)…I know a lot of people will hate and I can’t wait…A.I. gets a bump down to top 5 for me, just cuz they have Iggy and a SLIGHTLY better supporting cast than previous years, though you wouldn’t know it lookin at their record. Top 5 should go 5. A.I. 4. Dwade 3. LeBronze 2. Nash 1. Kobe
You can make a case for KG being in the top 5, but lack of playoff success hurts him…Not to mention the boneheaded antics of McHale…KG slides down a little for being a little too loyal to Awesome PF’s that become inept GM’s…

Chris Bosh I think is capable of statistical brilliance, and I think that will show this year. He needs to get some more boards and swats (in other words, more D) which he is capable of. He is as humble as NBA players get which is nice, but I think Raps fans wish he had a little more nastiness and intensity. btw he has added a 3 pointer this year.

As long as they dont put him in front of Dwight ‘D12′ Howard were good. He’s a hell of a player and is doing his thing (In canada none the less) but 20 sound just right. Bosh is good at 20. He’s a key player in the future of basketball, along with the Lebrons, Chris Pauls, Wades, etc etc. I know I’m beating a dead horse at this point, but I gotta question putting him ahead of the likes of Shawn Marion. That Marion ranking is going to haunt this list up until the top five I think…..

Will says:
Imagine being drafted in front of Dwyane Wade and saw Wade went from loveable rook to playoff hero to Finals MVP in three season. Yet Bosh himself post pretty respectable numbers and game such that nobody ever muttered the word “Bust” ever to Chris Bosh. That is in itself an accomplishment. Being in Canada I watched a lot of Raptors game. I looove Chris Bosh’s game. Smooth perimeter jumper, long arms that get rebounds and finish around the rim, effective post up game, respectable foul magnet and great free throw shooter to boot(81%). The only knock on him is “he gets his points in the flow of the game” or in other words “he is not dominant/game changer”. I think that’s probably Mike James’ fault more than Chris Bosh’s.
With his shooting ability, quickness and post up moves together with long arms, he could be averaging beyond 25 per gamewith several forays to the 40s and 50s. But he’s averaging a solid and stable 22, with no fluctuation whatsoever. I think his career high is only 37. His ex-backup (Charlie Villanueva) career high was 46 or something. I don’t see how CB4 shooting 3ptrs could help Toronto. Garnett did that once too (he was on fire from behind the three point line at the beginning of the season and everybody is spelling DOOM for the rest of the NBA) before he went away from it. btw, Shawn Marion is rated #3 in Top 100 fantasy players in NBA.com. T-Mac? 31st.

Oct.19 at 5:01 pm
maurice says:
The reason why people ’sleep’ on Bosh is because he plays on one of the worst teams in the league and has actually done little himself to remedy that situation. Nobody ever sees the Raps on TV except for when their team plays them, and as history has shown, the Raps lose a lot more of those games than they win despite Bosh’s best efforts. TO should just be happy to have an elite player again

this is the first guy you have really messed up. unless im sleeping on about 10 people Bosh belongs much higher. Especialyl considering this is about one’s value to their franchise. Only Lebron and Wade are viewed as definetly better younger players. Remember this is a big man and big men win championships. We all know without shaq wade wouldnt be the un-fuck-witable. If Bosh was in New York he would be top 5. I think he should be in the 8-10 range easily.

The reason Bosh is going to blow up is he spent the last 3 years wasting energy guarding 5’s when he’s a true 4… and doing that he still averaged 22.5/9.2… Also how much more will he score when he is playing on a fast break team that is now designed to shoot on average 15-20 more shots a game than last year?

Oct.19 at 7:15 pm
Erkos finest says:
Way too high, he’s was on the court while someone scored 81 points, surely a top 20 player would be able to do something about that. And yeah those are nice numbers but since he’s been playing, over the last 3 years, how many games have the raptors really won??? so if you take into account this list is based on importance to team, if CB wasn’t in the raptors they would what, lose more games??? answer: NO!!! scenario: take another look at the list and the players that were ranked lower, take for example, pau, kidd, billups or redd and trade one of them for cb and im pretty sure raptors would win more games. stats are nice but the boy doesn’t know how to get the W and that’s what’s important to a team. PS even trade b diddy (helathy) for him and the raps would win more games, and i have a feeling that bd won’t even make the list, if so this list and any record of it should be deleted from all computer servers around the world and we should all deny it ever exsisted.

Chris O'Leary says:
I’d have put Bosh higher, but that might be because I’m enjoying one of the few advantages of watching ball in Canada, that being all 82 Raps games are televised here. Bosh’s rebounding should spike this season with the new offense and if the Raps can actually win some games and make the playoffs, he should at least be a name tossed around come MVP time. And I’d never, ever…ever ever ever trade Bosh for Baron Davis. Not even in a videogame.

Drolfe says:
Someone should ask Chris Bosh how he survived the ice age and other factors that wiped out the dinosaurs. Dude’s a Ornithomimus. Straight up. And he plays for the Raptors. Coincidence? Or something more sinister?

Chris Bosh is ready to take it to the next level this year. I hope he does average 25 and 11 cause I got him on my fantasy team. Bosh has improved every year he has been in the league. No reason to see that stop this year since he is finally playing with a real point guard. Bosh should probablly be a little higher on the list 17, 16, 15? Were getting to the point where it is the best of the best. Amare Stoudemire should be top ten that ranking still bothers me. Shiz where is Tim Duncan at? Duncan was injured last year but he will have a monster year and should be higher then Iverson or Bryant.

this seems like a pretty good sport for CB. If his team won more games, he’ll probably get ranked higher. He’s definitely one of the best big men in the game right now. his game is soooo smooth! but there’s a chance he might end up like Shareef Abdur-Raheem, another smooth big man who played in canada and never won anything. but hopefully, bosh’s fate will end differently…

good call if the the raps won more games then he would have ranked higher or he would have been more deservant of this spot, becuase his numbers would not just equal nice stats, they would equal wins. sure his rebounds might go up and even his scoring but as it says on the top of the page ‘right here right now,’ his numbers are just numbers without the W. so please don’t think i don’t like cb, he is smooth for his size and extremely athletic, but maybe this season if he learns how to get the W without blaming his surroundings, and making those numbers count and lead his team from the bottom of the league to the playoffs, he should be an MVP candidate, but that’s yet to happen. my opinion is and it’s only my opinion, in a league of 300 or so players and your supposedly one of the top 20 your team would have a shot of winning more games… NO EXCUSES NEEDED FULLSTOP. Because great players don’t need them, that’s why there great. (Consider if you rate a player to be top 20 in this league which pretty much means world, you consider him to be great.)

This is about the right spot for CB4. A great point brought up was about the wins. Sure he puts up great numbers, a terrific talent, but the question remains whether he can put it all together and win at the NBA level. This year will make or break Bosh’s career. All the pieces to at least make the playoffs are there (especially in the Atlantic) and Rob Babcock and Araujo and Vince Carter are no longer distractions (add in rafer alston). Bosh is one of my favourite players and i HOPE he one day reaches Garnett/Duncan status but if he can’t win when it is unquestionably his team, he could end up being a Shareef Abdur Rahim.

I also believe Dwight Howard is overrated. In terms of skill Bosh is better. Howard was hyped up coming out of highschool and somehow the hype has transcended to his NBA career. Howard is EXTREMELY limited offensively. He’s like a young Ben Wallace. Really what does he do? He rebounds, and uh….thats it. He’s a glorified garbage player, who gets his baskets off dunks and tip-ins. Jameer Nelson is the clutch guy on the Magic. Comparing Howard to Bosh is like saying Gary Payton is still the Glove. It’s far’fetched. If Bosh plays in Orlando, he would probably hear more talk about him being the next Karl Malone or some shit. And speaking of shit, Dwight Howard, considering all the hype and praise, is.

Think the Raptors would trade Bosh for Jerome James?
Oct.19 at 11:19 pm
TrippleX says:
thats not funny. Jerome James is a piece of garbage. IMO, Bosh should be higher, at least above D-How and CP3. These rankings are rly messed. “Right here, right now…” Bosh is better than CP3 and D-How right now. Although they have higher ceilings than Bosh, it’s not like he’s much older than them. He’s 1 yr older than both of them: 1 season ahead of Dwight and 2 seasons ahead of CP3. Also, guys like J-Kidd, Billups, Marion, Diaw, etc. are ranked too low. Also, where are guys like Lewis,Okafor, Brad Miller, C-Webb, Jefferson, Odom, Al Harrington, Baron Davis, Sheed, Prince,Ilgauskas, Hughes, Ben Gordon, etc. just to name a few… Id save guys like Bargs, Mustache man, Darko and maybe even Kaman for the future. That is all my friends. You have heard from the XXX, Vin Diesel, Trippler, w/e you wanna call me…

Chief says:
Fucking Rights, CB4 deserves this spot on the list, cause even though things always look dark in Toronto, and all of Canada hates that city(ahem), Bosh has never hung his head he’s just improved and been the leader in the wake of Wince Carter’s departure. A member of one of the deepest draft classes ever(yes i said it), this new school star will just keep stepping. Look for him in the playoffs this year(fingers are crossed, hope TJ Ford makes up for that waste of a first draft pick)!

Just wanna point out that unlike our last ahem superstar in Toronto, CB4 *competes*. Night in, night out. Whatever the score is, even if the Raps are down 15, its really heartening to see the most talented guy on the court putting in the most effort, fighting for loose offensive boards, hustling like mad and showing so much emotion.

maurice says:
Anyone who thinks some bullshit to the effect of ‘oh Kobe was gonna score 81 on whoever that night’ or ‘no one coulda stopped him’ is a deranged Raptors fan. I also watched that game, and because I’m not deranged, I noticed that they didn’t even double team the guy. Kobe was on fire in the first half but the Raps were still dominating, so the coached decided to let him go. Jim Todd said as much in half-time courtside interview. They didn’t send a second guy at him till it was too late. It was amazing that Kobe put up and made all those shots, and it was an incredible individual performance but it was also a debacle from the Raps side. and Mo Pete, Jalen, Chris Bosh and especially Sam and the coaches will and should always have those 81 attached to their names as well.
Oct.20 at 1:05 am
Gord says:
It’s absolutely ridiculous to blame Chris Bosh for scoring 81 points. First of all Kobe’s one of the best players in the NBA. Secondly, he’s a shooting guard and Bosh is a 4!! You can’t blame him for not stopping Kobe. And give the guy a break. He’s only going into his 4th season in the NBA and basically his entire team is shit the past few years. They haven’t had a really good point guard since Damon Stoudamire (Chauncey doesn’t count, he hadn’t done anything till he went to Detroit), Carter single handedly fucked the franchise, despite all the good he did for us…so now, if the Raps don’t make the playoffs or at least win some games in the next two years THEN you can call him out. But not until then.

they shouldve taken turns fouling kobe each time he brought the ball down, until there was no one left on the 12 man roster to guard him anymore. Then they would have to forfeit the rest of the game. Thats what MJ himself said he woudlve done, gotten fouled out before he let kobe drop 81.

Fascinating discussion about Bosh/Howard in here. I’m hoping from a similar reaction from both bigs this season, that Bron and (especially) Wade had after Larry Brown made them chill at the olympics. Always a pleasure talking Raptors Ball! Chris Bosh is a fantastic player and easily the best power forward since Karl Malone. Book it! More importantly than that this kid is easily the most fantastic individual I have ever met in my life. He is kind, courteous, caring, compassionate, polite, understanding and a truly wonderful human being. In fact, I tend to think that Chris transcends humanity in the sense that he is probably a celestial being who has come to Earth only to spread good will to the NBA and the greatest city in the world Toronto. He is a class act to say the least! I one used the restroom directly after Chris had been in there, and guess what, my main man had forgotten to flush. Now your’re man the Swirsk has seen a lot of turds in his day, but this was the real deal! It smelled wonderful! Look for Chris to win MVP for the next 10-15 years straight and the Raps to be perennial champions.

Bosh will destroy “D12″ when the Magic and raps play. Seroiusly, Howard got no game. He’s just built. Like it’s all power with him no actual finess. You’d be fool to go to him in crunch time. I won’t speak on this matter any more. Howard gets the stats, agreed. Yes he has terrific size to be a great rebounder, but his overall game leaves much to be desired.

ok, cb4 is da bomb. he should be higher than d12. sure d12 gets more rebounds and blocks, but cb4 is better all around and can score better. bosh should flourish now w/ the new offense and tj ford running the point. GO RAPTORS.

Chris Bosh should be top 12 and maybe just maybe top 10 its the intangibles…not only that but I would rather have hime then Carmelo on the Raptors and id also rather have him over Wade so all you haters shutup cause CB$ is comin fast and the raps are making some big time noise this year trust me

Bosh is one of the best players in the NBA. He plays hard every game and should be MVp. It only took him 3 years to become an all-star, that’s talent. I think he is one of the top 10 players in the NBA easily.

CB4 says:
Chris Bosh only had one problem on team usa and that was coach k didnt play him. I think number 20 is a good place for him. He is easily a top 10 maybe top 5 PF. Only guys aheadof him are Dirk, Duncan, KG, JO, and Amare if he isnt a center. This year he was the best player in the east no questions.

First of all, Vince Carter is a bitch.
Chris Bosh is better than Jermaine O’neil and sure hellz better than D12. Honestly D12 has no skill, all he does is dunk the ball. Chris Bosh should be top 15 on this list. WTF is 20?

I know that this may soinds really predictable…but I would have BC before VC. I mean if we are looking at them in the game today (which is what it is supposed to be right)…VC is on a steadly downslide…and CB is on the rise.
