SLAM Extra: NCAA Preview (Part 1)
The SLAM staff breaks down the upcoming NCAA hoops campaign…
As promised in SLAM issue 102, besides the NCAA men’s and women’s previews in the magazine we’ve recorded what we’re calling The SLAM Roundtable to delve into the NCAA hoops scene a little further. There’s not really a round table involved, but we do have Ryan, Lang, Ben, Khalid and Sam, all discussing the biggest players and teams in the upcoming college hoops season.
Part 1 drops today, part 2 through 4 will pop up as the week rolls on.
Enjoy…and if you don’t agree, by all means let us know in the comments section below…

I think it needs a bit more structure guys.. sounds like I’m eavesdropping on a bunch of buddies drinking beers, and in the last case I couldn’t tell which player you were talking about? He runs the floor like a 4? So did you guys think KState was going to be good or not? Any picks for the Final Four? not really.. I’m not sure what to take away from that, except some team has a bunch of former AAU teammates playing together as froshes. Maybe its my listening skills.

have you guys ever heard of the arizona wildcats? you mentioned them in passing and not even in the context of the discussion of 2007 teams to beat florida. it’s all good though, because that’s the way we like it out west, just ignore us now and act like you knew all about us later on when we’re making headlines. zona is going to come correct this year. williams, mccleanan and budinger on the wings…that is too hot for any team to handle. not to mention the deep ass bench and the highly highly underrated nic wise. last year was an abiration and the loss to illinois the year before that was just a bunch of crap. i’m putt’n ya’ll on notice right now. zona 2006 - 2007 national champs.

This is a pretty cool idea guys. I personally would like to see a video of your discussions on various basketball topics/ issues or even a SLAM T.V show? Maybe? Just make sure it isn’t anything soft like NBA access. Because if any one group of guys know their stuff about basketball, it’s you guys. Real great idea though.
Also, of course since I’m a huge College Hoops fan and I follow it religiously, here are my two cents. If OJ Mayo goes to an underrated or smaller D-1 team, that team WILL end up in the AP top 25 at least, but if he joins a major program like USC or Cincinatti (I heard even UCLA) they will be top 10 easily. Bear in mind the fact that wherever Mayo goes his “teamate-for-life”, Bill Walker, will go too. That’s the two top players in their recruiting class going to the same school, and these aren’t just any two players.
Also, about LSU… they are dead! Yeah I know Glen “Big Baby” Davis is still there and he can try his best to put them on his back but remember, he’s a “below the rim”, average player and they wont make it outta the first round as a double-digit seed, if they get that lucky. Tyrus Thomas was the spark that got that team as far as they did, and he realized it, thats why he has the adidas logo on his jersey this year. Lastly, I strongly feel the gators will be satisfied with one ring and all the hoopla they have surrounding them this year on being the best, so they’ll just sit back and enjoy the attention till their NBA tickets are punched. (once in a while they’ll play their asses off to keep the attention positive though, but nothing more)
My 2006-2007 Champs are the Wildcats of Arizona, they’re deep, talented, experienced, Hall of Fame coach hungry and due. Even when they win though I know it will still be a shock to me though. 92-88 over talented North Carolina team.
Thanks for letting me throw out my thoughts a little bit, but I have lots more if you guys wanna hear, or if you want a dedicated writer, (wink- wink.) but toos aroun that T.V show idea and keep the discussions coming. Matt V-K. #20

Matt, LSU is going to be perfectly fine this year without Tyrus Thomas and Darrel Mitchell. Tasmin Mitchell is going to have a breakout year and is going to have a national spotlight on him come tournament time. Big Baby is Big Baby of course and he has shed a few pounds in the off-season so he should be better than ever. As for Tyrus’s replacement, Magnum Rolle is going to make alot of people forget about Thomas this year. He is going to come onto the scene just as quick as Thomas did. He might not be as atheletic and dominant on the defensive side of the ball, but there shouldn’t be that much drop off at the PF spot. Here is the thing though that is going to keep LSU strong this year. Backcourt depth. Minor returns from a season ending injury to take over the reigns at PG, which leaves Temple as our 6th man. Mason, the transfer from Marquette (former CUSA freshman of the year) should slide into our SG spot left vacant by Mitchell. This team is going to be nasty this year and will finish in the top 10, book it.

Arenas says:
My apologies about listing Dameon Mason as cusa freshman of the year, meant to list him as making the all freshman team his freshman year. Anyway, Darrell Mitchell won’t be missed that much with this guy coming into to take over for him.

the tar heels will be cutting down the nets in atl this year. They have the best returning player in the nation tyler Hansbrough (you know its true),as well as the top ranked pg(ty lawson),sg(wanye ellington),and pf(Brandan wright). also the tar heels return over 80% of their offense from lats year. that combined with 3 major blue chip prospects, other solid freshmen(alex stephenson etc),talented returnees (danny green, wes miller etc.) spells ncaa championship and pounds into the skulls of the dumb ones that Roy williams can reload with the best of them and simply squash the rest of them (wake, nc state etc.)

Matt says:
Thanks Arenas for the imput, you make a lot of valid points. Maybe “dead” was a bit of an exaggeration but they are not the sleeper like they were last year. They had a huge spotlight shined in their faces in March and nobody is gonna make light of them. So what I am basically saying is that they have a target on their chest this year and a lot of teams, both non-conf. and SEC, will be looking to make a statement by defeating them. They will be solid though, of course, but not as athletic or as, I might even say the word, dominant as they were a year ago. John Brady has attracted a bunch of talented guys to his team, even before the incredible tourney run, so they will undoubtably be good, just not good enough. Remember this is the year of the high school studs actually going to college so the nation is now overwhelmed with young talent, this will be a season for the ages though, no doubt about it. What are your thought on the team with the ring, Florida Gators, for 2006-2007? Who do you got for the Final 4? Also, since I put my neck on the guillotine and announced a Champion and final score I’m a bit curious on yours… well thanks again for the reply and input. Lastly, real good point on Magnum Rolle, I almost forgot about him, but I think Tasmin Mitchell will have a sub-par year, or at least that’s what my sources foresee.

jr says:
tamin mitchell will not have a subpar year as he will be the second option behind big baby. he is flexible and can create shots or bang inside he should hover around 15 a game and 7 rebounds and in the process lead lsu to the elite eight or even a return trip to the final four. also Kansas, unc, florida, and pittsburgh. honorable mentio to lsu, alabama, arizona, ucla, and texas (kevin durant impact will be like melo 2007)

A lot of good, solid teams competing this year. With the season just beginning, anything can happen. You need to checkout Winston-Salem State University. They’re brand new to Division I this year and have one of the toughest schedules you can imagine: Georgetown, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Fresno State, Kansas - just to name a few. Only lost to Wake Forest last year by 4 points in exhibition. Worth a look to see what’s up.
