U-S-Delay (Part Deux)
We have a final score between Brazil and the USA…
>>SPOILER ALERT
This time I’m going to put it out there: Team USA won again last night, squeaking out a win over Brazil, 90-86. Carmelo tweaked his knee (after piling up 16 points in two quarters), and without Melo, despite a 14-point halftime lead, Team USA had to hang on pull this one out.
I obviously haven’t seen the game yet — it’s airing on NBA-TV all day and night — so I don’t want to say too much about it. But I can say this: coming off a 14-hour flight and then playing back-to-backs, I’m not too surprised that this one was considerably closer, especially reading that Brazil had a 16-0 second-half run. I don’t know if Coach K was playing guys that shouldn’t have been playing, if he was resting people, if the Brazilian cheerleaders were all that, whatever.
I’ll watch the replay tonight and break that down later.

yea yeah bull. Im sure those same biased refs call wade for traveling all the time and ticky tack fouls when brand or howard guard some skinny big. excuses, excuese. The us is flat out better and thats going to be a tough pill to swallow for a lot of people internationally and at home.

bob, thats silly. Wade gets called for traveling because he travels. Anybody who saw the Playoffs can see that. All he has to do is stop traveling, his first step is still hard to stop. A good US team that plays hard and takes the Gold will be welcome by the international scene. People hated before because they were an eye sore to watch. They’re a lot better this time around but don’t expect many Dream Team-like scores in games that count. Even if Shaq and KG were out there it wouldnt happen. There are few true scrub teams 14 years later. Brasil is a tough team. Hopefully they can keep together during the tournament and not bow out early as usual.

nah son. Yall trippin thinkin the rest of the world is still shook. They would win all games no doubt, but there would be some tight ones in there. On some slow down, low turnover execution. Btw though, Coach K is a perfect coah for this team. heres a cat they dont have to face or play for during the year. eventhough he’s a bitch his track record is dope and the college game is closer to the international game than the NBA. I wouldnt say he’s the top coach in there, but he definetly equalizes any advantages opposing teams had.

And you guys know what? Our team didn’t play well at all, specially at the end. And indy is right - us won with the help of referees.

KG helped the US win Gold in 2000. But seeing how his Summer has been busy, I have no problems with him not being on the team and don’t know if he even got the invite from Colangelo and Co.

well…. yall are acting like brazil is a scrub team. Brazil is a good well coached solid team. U.S. is the best team out there this time around but you cant expect to blow teams out by 30-40 plus every night. But all said and done MELO got injured but i dont seeing it having any affect i expect him back next game or the one after that!

Kobe? when, next next NEXT generation? Kobe only plays for himself, and he decision to bail, ehm “knee surgery” was coz he knows coach K isn’t a playa hater, but he ain’t exactly got the “kobe shoots all he wants and scores 100 in the world champs and we lose” stuff goin on. but I dig that, thats why i’m a kobe fan. and the REAL Dream Team? Mike, Chuck and all?
thats another reason why Mike leaving the game plus the some of the HOF players leavin gave like a huge talent gap to Team USA. And the lockout didn’t exactly help either. still recoverin from that, word

yo guys i was at the game! Brazil was winning and with 3 minutes to go, a black referee called a flagrant foul on a half court play at mid court, then USA shot 4 free throws, and the possession after. Joe Johnson then was awarded an NBA touch foul which build up a 5 pt lead. Who knows where the flagrant come from? I was a big NBA fan, I was with a Wade jersey, so do all the chinese fans in the arena. But the way Brazil played, the hustle, they should be rewarded the win and the applause. Its pissing us off the great game end that way. With the way USA played, i doubt if they could beat argentina, italy or Serbia.

i figured the u.s. woulda been tired playin back-2-backs n they lost melo n wade. but brazil is just as far, so i’m curious if they just arrived too, cuz they oughta be jet lagged. the flagrant and the two technicals were just terrible calls. they were brutal for brazil, and i just wished it coulda been decided without the refs having that big an impact on the game. i’m a basketball fan in general, not a usa hater/fanatic. hopefully the world championships gonna bring up some more good games while we’re waiting for the season to start. it’s interesting to see how dominant sideshow was in the international game, he was by far player of the game, just killin it every which way.

i wasn’t rooting for team brazil or team usa specifically, and i was enjoying the game up until the bad calls. but let’s not try to put race in the issue. i saw the game last night on tv (thankfully some network was showing it) and the refs DID give some bad calls, but i’d like to think race had nothing to do with it. the refs gave team usa something like 8 or so straight free throw attempts which gave them the lead from brazil. the officiating was bad. period. no need to point out if the referees were black, white or whatever race. although if i were the coach from brazil i’d have told my players to just go through the motions after what transpired. what happened was really demoralising and wrong.

Y’all gotta remember that even though this is a US team, a lot of the best ballers aren’t American…
Nash
Nowitzki
Yao
TP
Manu Ginobili to name a few Plus a lot of the “team” guys are from overseas too…
Barbosa
Arroyo
Varejo
Nene Some of these guys have played all over the world, where they use international rules Granted, if the US play their best all the way through, they will win, and fairly easily too most games, but you still have to recognise the other countries, ain’t no complete landslide here

The ref is black and he’s black. the other 2 were chinese so if he’s not black, how could i distinguish him? Don’t be too sensitive!!! If you are not thinking the other way, you won’t think that way. In my opinion, Chris Paul and James’ tempo was destroyed by Barbosa and Garcia. They dribbled too much. If they play that way, I think they have no chance against team that play good zone. They should pass faster. They were in good shape when melo was taking spot up shots. When melo’s gone, they tend to dribble 1 or 2 and shoot, which is good for NBA, but definitely not international games. Brazil wasn’t a good flopping team, if they’re against Argentina, the touch foul would go the other way. They really need to be careful cuz ‘the ref’ gave them the calls tonight. Imagine if they lost to Brazil, the whole world will be against them and it’ll put great pressure on them. Varejao was a beast, Dwight and Bosh look lost in front of him. No wonder someone would draft Darko watching his tape. Varejao could be a good player, solid, defence, rebounding. James needs him as a Horace Grant type of player. Barbosa was plain quiiiiiiick. If he earns more tricky dribbles from Nash, he will be unstoppable. When there are more international players in the NBA, the game will further change. I think Starting lineup for US should be: C Anyone
PF Brand
SF Anthony
SG Wade
PG Arenas They could sneak Brand to C and put James at PF.

Joel O's says:
Without a doubt USA has the best team *on paper*, talent wise. In Lebron and Wade alone you have the two best players on this planet, but the best collection of individuals doesn’t always win. Case in point:
Brazil at the World Cup had such ridiculous firepower everyone thought they would just win every game by a huge margin, but they didn’t and never even clicked. I do think the US basketball team has a much better cohesion level than Brazil’s soccer squad, but you just can’t count out the strong European and South American teams this time around.
