Here’s Alonzo Mourning, back when he was the franchise player for the Miami Heat, making the only face he knows how to make, which is looking intense and screaming. At his peak he was a tough power forward that was good enough to be one of the best centers in the league, especially on defense. This is the season preview issue, and Miami had the best season in team history up to that point, getting all the way to the Conference Finals before understandably losing to the Bulls dynasty. Zo would of course return to the East Finals, and go further than that nearly 10 years later.

Michael Jordan. He’s so great that he melted the SLAM font and it became see-through. His return to the game was greater than anyone could have expected, and he still had two more championships with Finals MVPs and legacy defining signature moments to go. The most unstoppable explosive athlete in the world added an unstoppable arsenal of turnaround jumpers and ball fakes to his game, making him the best player above and below the rim. The result was an NBA season where if the Chicago Bulls lost a game, it sent shockwaves through the league for a solid week.
