Alexina Medley, Principal, Warren Easton High School in Mid-City. She has been at Warren for nearly 20 years. Grew up in the Bahamas. Lived in New Orleans for 30 years. Lives near City Park.
After the storm our kids didn’t have any thing else except basketball. We opened our gym doors and kept kids off the street. Basketball gave the kids another avenue, its keeps kids busy, gives them something to do.
If you want to play basketball then you have do the right thing in the classroom, in the hallway and in any establishment outside of school. Basketball is life, it is another way to learn that with talent comes discipline comes responsibility, it’s not just about talent. I may know how to shoot, but if I don’t know how to respect myself and know how to conduct myself, getting that recognition won’t happen. The kids know that wherever they are they represent the school.
