Phi Vu, 16, born and raised New Orleans East. Grew up on Chateau Court.

During the tournament, when I got the ball, everyone in the crowd was staring at me, I felt so much pressure, but then I made the shot and the crowd went wild and was roaring, I could feel the vibration on the court. It’s just so exciting and motivates you, you have everyone supporting you, it just makes you want to play more and more.

Basketball is the universal sport down here. Everyone plays here. It feels good to go to other courts and play and feel the pressure of a new place and make a good first impression. Basketball has allowed me to meet new people and make new friends, some friendly competition.

I dedicate myself to the expectations of my team, my own and the other players. On a team you have friends that support you and make you better. I use life philosophies sometimes on the court, like don’t be afraid, just go for it, if you make it you make it and there is always next time. Basketball has made a positive impact on my life and I have just gotten my cousin into it now.
